FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP
This support group is for anyone who has had mental illness touch their lives. Consumers, family members, friends, and those who work as mental health care providers are all welcome.
We meet the second Thursday of each month from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at Oaklawn, 2600 Oakland Avenue, Elkhart, Indiana. As you drive into the Oaklawn parking lot from Oakland Ave, the first door of the building is open from 7:15 to 7:45 PM. If someone is not at the first door to let you inside, please enter by the last door which is open until 7:45 PM. (See map on CONTACT US) The meetings are friendly and informal; refreshments are occasionally served.
The format of the Support Group is:
(1) From 7:30-about 9:00 PM we have support and sharing; if we get done early, the last 20-30 minutes is spent in discussing upcoming NAMI events or current mental health issues.
(2) Occasionally we have a guest speaker who will speak the first hour. That will usually be announced prior to the meeting date.
(3) You do not have to be a NAMI member to attend the first few meetings.
The Family Support Group Meeting is announced in the Events Calendar of The Elkhart Truth on Monday of the week of the meeting.
To Join our NAMI Support Group: It is not required that you join NAMI the first few meetings that you attend, so come and get acquainted! NAMI Connection will be starting if enough people sign up to join. The support group is FREE. It will meet at Oaklawn in Elkhart, 2600 Oakland Avenue, and is called “NAMI Connection”. The room number is 104 lobby room through the main door. The group is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Elkhart County. If you have a mental illness or know of someone who does, please contact Charlotte at 574-596-6464; she will direct you to the leaders of the support group. You must sign up to join the class. The leaders are trained people who are doing well with their illness.Since everyone has similar experiences, there is a lot of understanding and empathy.
